Television Boycotts In The Name Of Jesus Are Totally OK With Teabagistan

Censorship! Freedom of speech! Religious liberty! OUTRAAAAAGE! Oh, wait. That deafening sound you hear is crickets, because the weekly boycott demands by the American Family Association, one of the nation's largest Christian advocacy groups, are totally OK with the Tea People.  Because when Christianist groups call for nationwide boycotts of television shows and their advertisers, that is a righteous use of the free market in order to preserve morality, marriage, family, and the American way. But when GAY groups use or threaten the use of a boycott, THAT is homofascist intimidation, intolerance, bullying, a stifling of religious liberty, and an attempt to deny the freedom of speech. Just so we're clear.

Tony Perkins Celebrates

"The attacks on Phil Robertson revealed to the American people that the push to redefine marriage is less about the marriage altar than it is fundamentally altering America's moral, political and cultural landscape. A&E Network's reversal in the face of backlash is quite telling to the American people who are growing tired of GLAAD and cultural elites who want to silence people and remove God and His word from every aspect of public life.

"The goal of GLAAD is to silence anyone who dare challenge the idea that homosexuality is normal. However, the Robertson family's refusal to cower to GLAAD's bullying and the ensuing backlash to the suspension, unlike anything since Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day, finally forced A&E Network to withdraw the suspension. We've also seen these intimidation tactics used against wedding florists, bakers, photographers who have been hauled into court, fined and even ordered to violate their religious beliefs by participating in same-sex weddings.

"Where is the fairness there? Where's the tolerance? There is none. This is why hundreds of thousands of Americans had enough and took a stand by signing petitions in support of Phil Robertson and the right of Christians to quote the Bible." - KKK-affiliated hate group leader Tony Perkins, via press release.

Robertson Family Reacts To Reinstatement

Posted to the Facebook page of Fox News reporter and asshat supreme Todd Starnes:
"The family is excited to keep making a quality tv show for our dedicated fans, who have showed us wonderful support. We will continue to represent our faith and values in the most positive way through Duck Dynasty and our many projects that we are currently working on. The outpouring of support and prayer has encouraged and emboldened us greatly."

Indian Satirist Takes On Homophobia

Via First Post Bollywood:
The controversy around Section 377 of IPC raised a lot of questions about gay people, gay sex and homophobia. What is this whole 'gay' thing, anyway, said a large swathe of Indian society. And why is everyone making such a big fuss about it? Actor Imran Khan has taken it upon himself to disabuse these people from their mistaken notions of homosexuality in a new satire video. Imran Khan poses as a sort of gay version of a sex advice columnist. In the video, Khan sits behind a laptop while viewers email in their questions.
You'll enjoy this. Not office-friendly.

HomoQuotable - Michelangelo Signorile

"The Duck Dynasty controversy has become so ugly so fast. It's time to just call it what it is. Religious zealots like Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson are using the Bible to defame a group of people and excuse horrible actions against that group in the name of their Bible, refusing responsibility for the hate their words condone and inspire. And much of the media seems to be going along with it because the Robertsons, a Louisiana family with a reality TV show on A&E, are home-spun country people whom everyone seems to love. I'm seeing way too much defense of this crap as free speech -- as if every corporation is forced to allow its employees to spew vile and offensive defamation against people. Try telling your boss that he or she is like a pig-f**ker and see how long you keep your job. Just tell him or her it's in the Bible, and see if that keeps you from getting shown the door immediately without collecting your stuff." - Michelangelo Signorile, writing for the Huffington Post.

Wingnuts Threaten Cracker Barrel Boycott

From the Facebook page of Cracker Barrel:
Cracker Barrel’s mission is Pleasing People. We operate within the ideals of fairness, mutual respect and equal treatment of all people. These ideals are the core of our corporate culture. We continue to offer Duck Commander products in our stores. We removed selected products which we were concerned might offend some of our guests while we evaluate the situation. We continually evaluate the products we offer and will continue to do so.
Complaints are pouring in, of course. Twitchy is rallying the anti-gay troops.

A&E Suspends Phil Robertson

The A&E network has suspended Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson for comments he made in which he compared gay people to horse-fuckers and said that we're all bound for an eternal agony in a lake of fire. (So to speak.)
“Duck Dynasty” star Phil Robertson has been suspended from the A&E reality series, following anti-gay remarks he made in an interview with GQ magazine. In a statement, A+E Networks said he had been placed on indefinite hiatus. “We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson’s comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series Duck Dynasty,” the company said. “His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community. The network has placed Phil under hiatus from filming indefinitely.” Robertson caused controversy with his comments, in which he grouped gays with “drunks” and “terrorists,” and said that they won’t “inherit the kingdom of God.
The haters are already screaming.

UPDATE: GLAAD responds via press release.
What’s clear is that such hateful anti-gay comments are unacceptable to fans, viewers, and networks alike,” said GLAAD spokesperson Wilson Cruz. “By taking quick action and removing Robertson from future filming, A&E has sent a strong message that discrimination is neither a Christian nor an American value.”

HRC's Chad Griffin: A&E Should Denounce Duck Dynasty Star Phil Robertson

"Phil Robertson’s remarks are not consistent with the values of our faith communities or the scientific findings of leading medical organizations. We know that being gay is not a choice someone makes, and that to suggest otherwise can be incredibly harmful. We also know that Americans of faith follow the Golden Rule – treating others with the respect and dignity you’d wish to be treated with. As a role model on a show that attracts millions of viewers, Phil Robertson has a responsibility to set a positive example for young Americans – not shame and ridicule them because of who they are. The actions of Phil Robertson unquestionably reflect on A&E. The network should take immediate action to condemn Phil Robertson’s remarks and make clear they don’t support his views." - Human Right Campaign head Chad Griffin, via press release.

Gentlemen Against Homophobia: German Male Celebs Kiss Against Russian Hate

The German edition of GQ Magazine has launched a campaign in which straight male celebrities kiss in protest against Russia's campaign against its LGBT citizens. Gay Star News reports:
Lifestyle monthly GQ, generally known for advertising fast cars and hot women to its readers, launched the Gentlemen Against Homophobia campaign. 13 celebrities puckered up for the pics. While relatively unknown outside of the country, they included actor August Diehl, the band Revolverheld and singer Herbert Grönemeyet. Six incredible photos were produced, aiming to be published all over Germany on buses, posters and billboards. ‘The intolerance that homosexuals are still fighting against is shocking,’ Editor-in-Chief José Redondo-Vega said. ‘With #Mundpropaganda we wanted to give a clear sign in favor of a free society.’
Here is the magazine's making-of video.
