HRC Gives $100K For Russian LGBT Rights

From the Human Rights Campaign:
Just 50 days from the start of the Sochi Winter Olympic Games, HRC announced today our first contribution to the Russia Freedom Fund in the amount of $100,000. The donation was made possible because individuals from around the world have joined HRC's "Love Conquers Hate" campaign, which is raising awareness about the Russian government outlawing even modest support for LGBT equality.

GLAAD Launches #OnlyWish Holiday Campaign To States Without Marriage

Via press release:
'Tis the season to share the joys of what it means to be a family. In 34 states, some couples can't marry because of who they love. Tell the governors of those states that all families should be protected. Share the holiday photos of your family -- whether you're LGBT or an ally -- with the governors of these states and enourage them to support equality for everyone. How? Send your family's holiday card to a governor of a state that doesn't recognize marriage equality. We've provided addresses below. Not into snail mail? Then email it. We included that information, too. Don't forget to include a message of support for LGBT families. Example message: "This holiday season, my family will be celebrating alongside our friends and neighbors. But we look forward to the day when all families will be able to celebrate equally. Please support marriage for all loving couples. Happy holidays."
You may recognize the family in the photo from JC Penney's Father's Day ad, which made One Million Moms ever so angry. The addresses for those 34 state governors are here.

TODAY: Queer Nation To Protest At NBC

Queer Nation will today crash the holiday party for NBC staffers at a hotel in downtown New York City. They write:
This is the not at all inspiring tale of the International Olympic Committee and eleven of the top Olympic sponsors' Road to Sochi. This coalition of some of the biggest mega-corporations on Earth dutifully and unfortunately followed the lead of feckless IOC president Thomas Bach. They have made a collective agreement that the shining ideals of the Olympic charter are merely easily expendable platitudes if they ever threaten to interfere with the collecting of large wheel barrels full of Olympic profits. The result of the IOC and sponsors' inaction is the Olympic charters' hollow assurances of non-discrimination and respect for basic human rights have now been reduced to mere jive talk and many in the global LGBTQ community are not at all fooled by it.

Gentlemen Against Homophobia: German Male Celebs Kiss Against Russian Hate

The German edition of GQ Magazine has launched a campaign in which straight male celebrities kiss in protest against Russia's campaign against its LGBT citizens. Gay Star News reports:
Lifestyle monthly GQ, generally known for advertising fast cars and hot women to its readers, launched the Gentlemen Against Homophobia campaign. 13 celebrities puckered up for the pics. While relatively unknown outside of the country, they included actor August Diehl, the band Revolverheld and singer Herbert Grönemeyet. Six incredible photos were produced, aiming to be published all over Germany on buses, posters and billboards. ‘The intolerance that homosexuals are still fighting against is shocking,’ Editor-in-Chief José Redondo-Vega said. ‘With #Mundpropaganda we wanted to give a clear sign in favor of a free society.’
Here is the magazine's making-of video.

ACLU's Big Gay Illegal Wedding Contest

The New York Times explains:
The A.C.L.U. is sponsoring a contest for same-sex couples who live in states that prohibit gay marriage but are next to where it is legal, places like Nevada, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin. Those couples are being asked to submit imaginative ideas for weddings — balloon rides, kayak trips and so on — that involve crossing the border from their home states, where same-sex marriages are barred, to states where they are legal. Based on votes on the microsite, five couples from five states will win prizes like cash, assistance from a wedding planner and a trip to New York for an event, planned for March, styled like a wedding reception. The winning couples will be encouraged to return home and present to their governors in April “guest books” signed by visitors to the microsite that will double as petitions calling for marriage equality. “We want to push the envelope on marriage equality in a fun, creative way,” said Anthony D. Romero, executive director of the A.C.L.U. in New York.

SAN FRANCISCO: Google Employee Bus Blocked By Protesters Who Demand $1B

Yesterday protesters in San Francisco blocked a shuttle bus for Google employees and demanded that the company pay $1B in fines for using the city's infrastructure without paying.
The buses have, for some, become a symbol of tech-fueled gentrification, economic inequality and soaring housing prices in the city. The bus, which was headed to Google’s Mountain View campus, had riders on board. A dozen protesters stood around the bus with signs saying “Public $$$$, Private Gains,” “Stop Displacement Now,” “Fine $271, Total Fine $1 Billion,” and “Warning: Two-Tier System.” The Google bus was parked at a 48-Quintara/24th Street Muni stop. The Municipal Transportation Agency in July proposed a plan to have about 200 Muni stops throughout the city serve as shared stops with private employee buses. The bus operators — private companies like Google, Facebook, Apple and Genentech — would pay for permits to use the Muni stops, and would give data to the city to help them plan their use. The 200 stops have not yet been selected, said Carli Paine, a project manager with the transit agency.
The protest spawned a Twitter feud between Google employees and local activists. Photo source.

LGBT Groups React To Mandela's Death

National Gay & Lesbian Task Force
Nelson Mandela was an inspiration to the millions of people who yearn for freedom across the world. With great personal sacrifice, he fought Apartheid and state-sanctioned racism. His principled approach, his willingness to reach out to former enemies, led to the introduction of multi-party democracy and real change in South Africa. Indeed, South Africa's post-apartheid constitution was the first in the world to outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation. His legacy is hope; hope that people can achieve peace and freedom in a world with more than its fair share of conflict.
Human Rights Campaign
Nelson Mandela tore down oppression, united a rainbow nation, and always walked arm-in-arm with his LGBT brothers and sisters—and with all people—toward freedom. Though every man, woman and child who seeks justice around the world mourns this loss, his vision of an equal future lives on undimmed. Mandela, who was South Africa’s first post-Apartheid president, was an outspoken advocate for LGBT equality. He appointed an openly-gay judge to South Africa's High Court of Appeal and during his presidency, South Africa became the first nation in the world to constitutionally prohibit sexual orientation-based discrimination. Mandela will be remembered for his social justice activism and commitment to equality for all people.
Lambda Legal
Lambda Legal joins others around the world in mourning the loss of Nelson Mandela, one of the 20th century's giants in the struggle for justice and human dignity. Every one of us who continues the fight for equality and civil rights in our own communities labors in the shadows of this man who withstood imprisonment as a consequence of his courageous leadership and grew only stronger, more resolute and more dignified. As South Africa's first elected black president, he led the people of his country toward reconciliation and forgiveness. Under his leadership, the new constitution of South Africa included explicit prohibitions against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation - a degree of legal protection that LGBT people still do not have in the United States.
All Out
We are deeply saddened to hear about Nelson Mandela’s passing. Yet, we are hopeful his legacy of tolerance and mutual respect will live on for generations," Andre Banks, Executive Director and Co-Founder of All Out said. “As All Out continues to work with partners throughout Africa to free those who are oppressed and imprisoned for who they are and who they love, we will be inspired by Nelson Mandela’s story and words.”

It Gets Better Sends Message To Russia

Via press release:
With the Olympics approaching, Russia will be the site of one of the most celebrated international gatherings in the world. At the same time, the former Soviet country will also be ground zero for an evolving human rights crisis, often resulting in violent discrimination. With a network of It Gets Better Project affiliates throughout the world, IGB has gathered international support for at-risk youth in Russia, and is committed to sending encouraging messages to a population that is in desperate need of hope for a brighter future. To accomplish this, IGB has partnered with LGBT advocates affiliated with Children 404, which is using Europe’s largest social network, Vkontakte, to connect Russian LGBT youth to the international community. Supporters are encouraged to visit IGB’s website and craft their own messages, which are then translated into Russian.
