Bill Clinton To Swear In Bill De Blasio

Via the New York Times:
Former President Bill Clinton will swear in Bill de Blasio as New York City’s 109th mayor at the inauguration ceremony on Jan. 1, the mayor-elect’s transition team announced in a statement on Saturday. Mr. de Blasio served in Mr. Clinton’s administration as a regional director of the Department of Housing and Urban Development and was the campaign manager for Hillary Rodham Clinton’s successful run for the Senate in 2000. Mrs. Clinton will also attend the inauguration. “I was honored to serve in President Clinton’s administration and on Secretary Clinton’s campaign for U. S. Senate, and I am honored again that they will both join our celebration for all of New York City,” Mr. de Blasio said in the statement. “Wednesday’s ceremony will be an event for every New Yorker from all five boroughs, and Chirlane and I couldn’t be more excited to have President Clinton and Secretary Clinton stand with us,” he said, referring to his wife, Chirlane McCray.
De Blasio's camp gave out 1000 free tickets to the inauguration last week. Some of those tickets are now appearing on Craigslist.

Historic New Low For NYC Homicides

Gothamist reports:
At today's NYPD graduation ceremony, Mayor Bloomberg announced some impressive news: The 2013 murder total, through today, was 332—a 20.7% drop from 2012's total of 419. This is the lowest since the city started keeping track in 1963. Bloomberg bragged, "New York’s crime-fighting strategies have made us America’s safest big city—and one that cities across the globe want to learn from. Twelve years ago, no one thought New York’s crime rate could go any lower. But it did: since 2001, crime has gone down by 32 percent and in a city of 8.4 million people, there have been fewer than 350 homicides."
At the peak of the crack epidemic in the late 80s/early 90s, New York City saw about 2000 homicides annually. Gothamist has the breakdown by year at the link.

Dance Of The Sugar Plum Lesbians

This story makes its tenth annual appearance on JMG....

Grand Central Terminal functions as the mechanical heart of midtown New York City, pumping out several thousand workers and tourists on one beat, then sucking in several thousand more on the next.

The rhythms of the terminal are fascinating.

Beat. Four thousand, inbound from New Haven.

Beat. Three thousand, outbound to Westchester.

Worlds collide on the main floor.

The tourists gawk up at the gloriously ornate ceiling and uselessly flash their digital cameras at objects hundreds of feet away.

The commuters rush up to the track displays to determine their track number, then dart across the terminal floor, dodging the milling tourists, heads down, like running backs heading for the end zone.

It's mesmerizing. It's majestic.

And sometimes, like tonight, it's magical.

I'm walking through the massive main room just as the holiday laser show begins on the ceiling. To the tune of Take The "A" Train, the laser depicts two trains arriving from different directions. The trains stop opposite each other and a reindeer leaps out of each one and crosses over to the opposite train.

The laser traces the outline of one of the zodiac constellations painted on the ceiling. The Cancer crab leaps to life and becomes the Crab Conductor, waddling down the center aisle of the car, punching the reindeers' ticket stubs with his claws.

I move over to the edge of the room, near the entrance for Track 25, so I can watch the reaction to the show. As usual, I'm more entertained by watching the audience than by watching the actual show.

At the ticket windows, standing in front of signs that say "Harlem Line" or "Hudson Line", commuters tilt their heads painfully back to view the show directly overhead. The tourists cluster in delighted circles, holding each others' elbows for balance as they nearly bend over backwards.

Some people move to the edges of the great hall, as I have, to remove themselves from the traffic flow while they watch. Among those that come to join me on the perimeter of the room is a lesbian couple. They stand quite close to me, the taller woman behind the shorter one, with her arms wrapped around her, supporting her a bit as they both lean back on the marble wall.

The shorter woman is stout with a large firm chest. Her hair is short and brushed back into what might have once been called a ducktail. She has an ornate tattoo on her left forearm and she has a leather wallet protruding from the rear pocket of her jeans, attached to her leather belt by a short silver chain. She has more than a passing resemblance to Tony Danza, her big boobs notwithstanding, so naturally (in my head) I name her Toni.

Toni's girlfriend is blond and her short ponytail dangles just above her collar. She is wearing long Christmas tree earrings which nearly brush her shoulders. Her lanky, sinewy limbs are bound in a tight running outfit, over which she is wearing a school athletic jacket. I imagine that she might be a coach at Yale or Harvard, perhaps a girls lacrosse coach, or maybe track and field.

Coach is squeezing Toni tightly and they bounce together to the music a bit. Coach looks over at me and catches me smiling. She nudges Toni, who looks over at me too, and we all grin goofily at each other for a moment.

Overhead, a new show begins. The familiar opening notes of Tchaikovsky's Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairies ring out as the Empire State and the Chrysler buildings sprout arms, bow to each other, and begin waltzing across the ceiling.

I look around the room and it's as if time was frozen for just a second, every person stopped in mid-stride, eyes cast upward, mouths open in silent joy.

Toni pushes away from Coach, turns around and delivers her a bow as deep and as elegant as the one just depicted overheard.

"Madame, may I please have this dance?" she asks Coach.

Coach looks around a bit awkwardly. "You are TOO much!" And she giggles.

"Madame, I must insist!" says Toni, as she takes Coach's hands into hers.

Coach relents and she and Toni begin a beautiful, slow waltz, moving in half-time to the music. As you might have guessed already, Toni leads.

As they dance, their eyes remain locked on each other. Toni is giving Coach an intense look, her lips tightly curled into a satisfied smile. Coach is grinning from ear to ear and again, she giggles.

All around Coach and Toni, the tourists, the businessmen, the students, the conductors, even the guy with a broom...they're all watching. Some are expressionless, but more are smiling, and some of them...some of them are frantically fussing with their cameras, eager to capture this magical New York Moment.

Serendipity prevails, the tune ends, and Toni dips Coach backwards with a dramatic up-sweep of her free arm as a firestorm of camera flashes erupt around them. Toni pulls Coach up and close to her and they hug. There's another camera flash and the crowd begins to move along.

Then.

"Hey, look!"

The laser show is being concluded with giant sprigs of mistletoe appearing over our heads. This time it's Coach who bends down and plants a long tender kiss on Toni's non-lipsticked mouth. There's another flash of cameras from the delighted audience.

Toni takes Coach's hand and they begin to move off towards the exit.

"Oh, don't stop!" says a disappointed woman, still rummaging for her camera.

Toni looks back over her shoulder and says, "I never will."

Grand Central Terminal, the mechanical heart of New York City, beats again. But this time I hear a different rhythm. This time I hear a double beat.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYBODY!

NYC To Ban E-Cigs In Public Places

Via press release:
Today – at the final meeting of the 2010-2013 legislative session– the City Council will vote to regulate electronic cigarettes, commonly known as “e-cigarettes,” by amending the Smoke-Free Air Act (SFAA) to prohibit the use of these devices in all areas where smoking is prohibited. One the City’s greatest achievements in combating the devastating effects of smoking is the Smoke-Free Air Act which bans smoking in public places, restaurants, bars and in private office buildings where people work. E-cigarettes threaten to undermine enforcement of the Smoke-Free Air Act because many brands are designed to look like cigarettes, and to be used just like them, which can lead to confusion and confrontation. Additionally, using e-cigarettes in places where smoking is permitted threatens to renormalize smoking in these places.
Earlier this month 200 e-cig users sat in on a City Council hearing on the issue and "vaped" for the entire session.

NEW YORK CITY: Teacher Claims Lesbian Boss Fired Him For Being Straight

An Upper East Side private school has been sued by a former gym teacher who claims that his lesbian boss fired him because she disapproved of his "traditional family status."
Gregory Kenney, 50, taught gym at the Trinity School on W. 91st St. for 16 years before he was let go in June 2012. Kenney, who lives with his wife and three young children in LI, says he was a well-liked employee at the elite institution that counts Truman Capote, Ivanka Trump and Eric Schneiderman as alumni, until a gay athletic director named Pat Krieger took over in 2009. Krieger allegedly forced him to coach three sports, even though his contract only required him to join two teams, according to his reverse discrimination suit. When he complained that the extra responsibilities interfered with his family obligations Krieger allegedly told him, “We all make choices,” the suit says. After Kenney told Krieger that he couldn’t keep working nights and weekends, she reported him to the headmaster “while a single, female teacher faced no scrutiny when she refused to coach a third season.”
Kenney's suit seeks unspecified damages.

Cops Raid Hell's Kitchen Gay Bar

DNAinfo New York reports:
A popular gay bar that's enraged locals by throwing loud parties and playing porn that's visible from the street was raided by the NYPD early Saturday morning and was temporarily shut down for operating without a liquor license, sources said. The raid on Fairytail Lounge, at 500 W. 48th St., was part of the Multi-Agency Response to Community Hotspots program and included police and investigators from the State Liquor Authority and the Department of Buildings, among others. In a November letter, Community Board 4 begged the SLA not to renew Fairytail's liquor license, citing years of community anger over loud parties seven days a week and crowds that down the bar's $3 drinks. Residents have also complained that porn playing on televisions and scantily clad male dancers are often visible from the sidewalk.
The bar reportedly reopened the next night and still does not have a liquor license.

Brooklyn Borough President: My Borough Is The Lesbian Capital Of The Northeast

"We remain the lesbian capital of New York City and the Northeast. In other words, we have a much larger lesbian population in Brooklyn. New York City is fortunate to have a large LBGT community, but in Brooklyn in particular, the lesbian community, there’s no question it’s the capital of the Northeast. They’ve made unbelievable contributions to the quality of life in our city and our borough." - Marty Markowitz, Brooklyn Borough President, speaking yesterday on WNYC.  Markowitz, one of the most colorful politicians in NYC, leaves office next month due to term limits.

Today's NYC Tabloids

TRAILER: Road To Home

From the producers:
In the avalanche of homeless young people spreading across America, nearly half are LGBT, despite the fact that gay kids make up only 5-7% of the general population. In an era of increasing openness regarding LGBT issues, where marriage equality is making strides and anti-gay bullying is publicly shamed, kids are coming out to their parents younger and younger. But social trends don’t translate into all households equally, and LGBT kids are often getting kicked out into the streets long before they’ve developed the skills to survive on their own.

Addressing this problem involves more than providing beds. It also involves providing hope and healing. Our 90-minute documentary Road to Home will follow the development of 4-5 LGBT homeless young people of various genders, backgrounds, and origins as they’re provided beds as well as guidance by the staff of the Ali Forney Center, the organization dealing with LGBT homelessness most effectively in New York City. By showing several young people finding a place to lay their heads and a way to heal their hearts, our film will not only depict a dramatic emotional journey, but also stimulate the attention LGBT homeless kids deserve.

BROOKLYN: Gay Man Claims Hate Crime Attack By Group Of Hasidic Men

A gay fashion student claims that he was attacked and beaten by a group of Hasidic men while walking on the street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The New York Daily News reports:
Taj Patterson, 22, was headed home to Fort Greene around 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 1 when he says more than a dozen ultra-Orthodox Jewish men began assaulting him on Flushing Ave. and yelling, “Stay down, faggot!” “I’m walking down some block by myself and then the next thing I know, I’m surrounded by a group of Hasidic Jewish men and they’re attacking me,” Patterson said. “I was alone. I was an easy target. I’m black. I’m gay, a whole slew of reasons." The New York City College of Technology student left for a fun night out with friends, and returned with a broken eye socket, a torn retina, blood clotting, and cuts and bruises to his knee and ankles. He was rushed to Woodhull Hospital and is expected to undergo surgery to reattach his retina.
An NYPD hate crimes unit is investigating. The police report says that Patterson was "highly intoxicated, uncooperative and incoherent" after the attack. According to the Daily News, the attack was witnessed by an MTA bus driver.

NYC Obesity Rates By Borough

From a survey released last week by the city, we see what some argue is the primary benefit of living without a car.
Staten Island shares top place in the citywide obesity record with the Bronx. The percent is lower in Brooklyn, where 27 percent of the population was reported as obese, followed by Queens, with 22 percent. The smallest percent of obese residents lived in Manhattan, arguably the city's most walking-active borough. There, slightly under 15 percent of the population tipped the scales over the obesity mark, according to the survey. More Staten Island men are obese (34 percent, or 58,000 people), compared to women (30 percent, or 56,000), the Health Department reported. Staten Island Borough president-elect James Oddo called the statistics "brutal," adding that the numbers "verify what I see with my own eyes."
Despite the various campaigns of the Bloomberg administration, the overall obesity rate in NYC has climbed 25% since he took office in 2002.

MANHATTAN: Stars Turn Out For Cyndi Lauper's Benefit For Homeless LGBT Kids

Last night Cyndi Lauper held her annual Home For The Holidays show at Manhattan's Beacon Theater, where Pink, Josh Groban, Rosie O'Donnell, Big Freedia, Susan Sarandon, Nelly Furtado, and the Indigo Girls were among the performers. The evening benefited Lauper's True Colors Forty To None Project, a name which references the fact that 40% of the homeless kids in New York City identify as LGBT.  Here are few clips from last night that appeared on YouTube so far.
