Out In Africa

Thabo Seroke has an important commentary printed at thoughtleader.co.za about human rights and civil rights in some African countries.

A couple of months ago, Uganda asked a question that could usher in the systematic hate aimed at a group of people. The question was simple: Who is going to inspire the senseless murder of gender-variant people in Africa?

This was not a view that needed to be vocalised by Ugandans, but many nations responded. Nigeria is the latest. The Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act, which provides penalties of up to 14 years imprisonment for gay marriage and a maximum of 10 years for membership or encouragement of gay clubs, societies and LGBTI organisations, was last week signed into law by Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan.

Since then, nearly 40 people have been arrested and many more threatened with violence.

Frightening stuff.
History provides many examples of same-sex practices such as the “boy-wives” of the Azande in contemporary Sudan and Congo, the gender-crossing queers of the Hausa Bori culture in … wait for it … modern-day Nigeria! Lesbian relations were also prominent among co-wives in polygamous marriages in 19th century Southern Sudan — the same polygamous practice frowned upon by the western world — which leads me to an unsurprising fact. Colonialism imposed this prejudice and other divisive ideals on a number of non-western societies.
Same-gender sexuality and relationships, as well as polyamorous relationships, are nothing new.
The issue in countries such as Uganda, Malawi and Nigeria isn’t a “gay issue”, it’s a human-rights issue.

Precisely!

We must stand up for the rights of ALL.

UGANDA: Anglican Church Bishop Applauds Anti-Homosexuality Bill

Clip recap:
The Anglican Church has applauded Parliament for standing firm and passing the contentious the Anti-Homosexuality Bill. While giving a Christmas sermon at St. Paul's Cathedral Namirembe, Bishop Wilberforce Kityo Luwalira said Parliament should continue to protect the country's conservative customs. He also asked Parliament to pass a law, which outlaws abortion. As Agness Nandutu reports, other pentecostal churches also added their voice against homosexuality in Uganda.

State Department Laments Uganda

This came in late last night:
U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesperson
Statement by Jen PSAKI, SPOKESPERSON
U.S. Concern with Ugandan Anti-Homosexuality Legislation

We are deeply concerned by the Ugandan Parliament’s passage of anti-homosexuality legislation. As Americans, we believe that people everywhere deserve to live in freedom and equality – and that no one should face violence or discrimination for who they are or whom they love. We join those in Uganda and around the world who appeal for respect for the human rights of LGBT persons and of all persons.

Scott Lively Denounces Homocons

"Our embrace of people like Tammy Bruce and Camille Paglia (as brilliant as the latter may be to quote on feminist issues) is the 'synthesis' phase of the Hegelian dialectic and poisonous to our theology and agenda. The rise of 'conservative' homosexuals is a ruse to sucker us into endorsing 'gay rights' in a slightly different form. Think about it for a moment. If these people were truly on our side politically or ideologically they would consider their homosexual inclinations a private matter and a challenge to be overcome, and never publicly identify as 'gay.' Lets have compassion for homosexuals but never align ourselves with them politically or give them a platform to legitimize their lifestyle. Anyone who self-identifies as a unrepentant homosexual is an enemy of the truth, no matter how 'conservative' they may sound. Love them as lost sheep, but hate the false premise they live their lives by.  When we endorse 'conservative gays' we are helping the entire 'gay' movement to advance at the expense of the Bible. Lets not dance with the devil!" - Hate group leader Scott Lively, failing to mention Matt Drudge, the most infamous homocon of them all.

Richard Branson: Boycott Uganda

"I have been courted by various people and government officials to do business in Uganda. I was seriously considering it. However, the dreadful witch hunt against the gay community and lifetime sentences means it would be against my conscience to support this country. I would urge other companies worldwide to follow suit. Uganda must reconsider or find it being ostracised by companies and tourists worldwide. Governments must realise that people should be able to love whoever they want. It is not for any government (or anyone else) to ever make any judgements on people's sexuality. They should instead celebrate when people build loving relationships that strengthen society, no matter who they are." - Billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson, in a statement published on the front page of the Virgin companies' website.

From The Ugandan Government Website

From the official website of the Ugandan Parliament:
The Anti-Homosexuality Bill, 2009 seeks to establish a comprehensive consolidated legislation to protect the traditional family by prohibiting any form of sexual relations between persons of the same sex; and the promotion or recognition of such sexual relations in public institutions and other places through or with the support of any government entity in Uganda or any other non governmental organization inside or outside the country. The Committee on Legal and Parliamentary Affairs said in its Report, “The Bill aims at strengthening the nation’s capacity to deal with emerging internal and external threats to the traditional heterosexual family.” The Committee also said that there is need to protect the children and youth of Uganda who are vulnerable to sexual abuse and deviations as a result of cultural changes, uncensored information technologies, parentless child development settings and increasing attempts by homosexuals to raise children in homosexual relationships through adoption and foster care. The Anti Homosexuality Bill provides a fourteen year jail term for one convicted for the offence of homosexuality; and imprisonment for life for the offence of aggravated homosexuality.

As Predicted

It would be interesting, actually, to find out if Phil Robertson wants American gays rounded up and sent to prison for life as Bryan Fischer does.

HRC Denounces Uganda's Anti-Gay Bill

"Representatives of the Ugandan government have launched a shameful sneak attack on their own people.  If this bill becomes law, countless LGBT Ugandans will be condemned to violence or prison. The United States government has a moral obligation to use every tool at its disposal to put a stop to this legislation. Perhaps most disgusting is the fact that American extremists have worked tirelessly in the name of Christianity to see this bill passed. True people of faith know that calling for the imprisonment of an entire community is not in line with Christian values. American Christian faith leaders with ties to Uganda must speak out and call on their colleagues in Uganda to oppose this bill from becoming law." - Chad Griffin, head of the Human Rights Campaign, in a press release that blames (in part) American evangelical Scott Lively for the passage of today's bill.

Uganda MPs Approve Life In Prison For Homosexuality, Citizens Must Report Gays Or Be Jailed Themselves

The BBC reports:
Uganda's parliament has passed a bill to toughen the punishment for homosexual acts to include life imprisonment in some cases. The anti-homosexuality bill also makes it a crime punishable by a prison sentence not to report gay people. The prime minister opposed the vote, saying not enough MPs were present. The bill has been condemned by world leaders since it was mooted in 2009 - US President Barack Obama called it "odious". The BBC's Catherine Byaruhanga in Kampala says the government knows there will be an international outcry, which could see some countries suspend aid to the country. She says that Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi might follow up on his complaints about a lack of quorum, while it remains to be seen whether President Yoweri Museveni will sign the bill into law.
More from Gay Star News:
The bill will make it illegal to 'promote' homosexuality and will also jail anyone who does not report homosexual activities to the police. Ugandan LGBTI people are said to be 'panicked' and 'afraid for their lives'. It has already been predicted it will lead to more deaths in the LGBTI community. Members of Parliament (MPs) heard every clause in the Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2009. But debate which was expected to run all day was over very quickly. The bill is now an act of parliament and is just awaiting a signature from President Yoweri Museveni, which could happen as early as tomorrow. Uganda LGBTI activist Frank Mugisha said he was in ‘total shock’, saying the motion had caught every gay rights advocate off guard. He said Kadaga, who promised last year to make the bill law as a ‘Christmas present’ to the nation, had been ‘cleaning up’ any shelved legislation.
Stand by for victory laps by Peter LaBarbera, Scott Lively, and Bryan Fischer.

Scott Lively Launches Bid For MA Governor

Earlier this year we learned that Scott Lively, who is arguably the most evil of all the American anti-gay crackpots, was planning to run for governor of Massachusetts.  Yesterday MassLive reported that Lively's campaign has been launched.
His campaign motto is "Qualified. Experienced. Electable." Publicly available campaign finance records show he has about $3,000 in his coffers, including a $2,000 loan to himself. Lively said he does not believe being the target of a 2012 lawsuit in federal court leveled by Sexual Minorities Uganda in connection with his anti-homosexuality campaign in that country will hurt his chances as a candidate. "If anything, I think it will help me when people learn how ridiculous the lawsuit is," he said during an interview. Lively is running as an independent in the "bluest of the blue states," he said. He said he will be a viable option for conservatives whom, he said, have been abandoned by Republicans and have no connection with Democrats, to whom he refers as "Communists." "The people of Massachusetts need a candidate who can clearly and unapologetically articulate Biblical values without fear or compromise," his campaign literature states. "They need a candidate who will tell the simple truth that abortion is murder, and homosexuality is condemned by God (but that Jesus forgives those who repent)."

Judge Denies Lively's Plea To Suspend Trial During Appeal To Higher Court

On Friday, Scott Lively filed a demand that his trial for crimes against humanity be suspended while he pursues a dismissal with the First Circuit Court of Appeals. Lively's first motion to dismiss was rejected by the U.S District Court in August. And today the district court again told Lively to go fuck himself. (Via Equality Case Files)

Pastor Scott Lively Files For Dismissal With First Circuit Court Of Appeals

Scott Lively has filed a demand that his trial for crimes against humanity be suspended while he pursues a dismissal with the First Circuit Court of Appeals. Lively's first motion to dismiss was rejected by the district court in August. From today's notice to the lower court:
This Court cannot be the first tribunal, worldwide, to recognize a claim for "persecution” based upon sexual orientation, because the ATS [Alien Tort Statute] precludes judicial creativity, requires judicial restraint, and provides only limited jurisdiction over clearly defined and universally accepted norms (Ex. A at 15-21); and (3) Lively’s alleged speech and conduct are not “criminal activity” but core political expression protected by the First Amendment (Ex. A at 21-25). The lower court usurped its authority in refusing to dismiss this action, because it is clearly without jurisdiction and SMUG’s claims are firmly foreclosed by the First Amendment. An extraordinary and immediate intervention by this Court is necessary because Lively has exhausted all alternatives and has no other viable means to confine the lower court to the lawful exercise of its proscribed jurisdiction, and to safeguard his First Amendment rights.
Lively is being defended pro bono by the Liberty Counsel. (Via Equality Case Files)

Uganda With the Wind

Uganda sure seems like a hellhole, with the corruption and the horrifying human rights record. Extreme homophobia is enough reason to stay way from the place. Now comes this report from Betty Angatai at newvision.co.ug about how some married heterosexuals are treated. I hope all peaceful and loving people can get out of there.
A 40-year-old man in Mayuge district has been expelled from his ‘Baise Magumba’ clan over incest after he married his 25-year-old niece.

Jowali Waiswa, a resident of Kavule village in Imanyiro sub-county, was on Sunday expelled after his clan members complained about his act of marrying a relative, an act that is against the norms of the clan and the Busoga culture.

Dalausi Magumba, the leader of the clan, said Waiswa secretly married his sister’s daughter and has stayed with her for six years, during which they have produced three children.
And yet the world didn't end. So why not leave them alone to love each other? Notice that no mention is made that there is anything wrong with the children. I'm sure that would have been included if there was.

Before he was expelled, Waiswa was tasked to avail the clan with three goats, two doves and two black cocks as a fine for cleansing his misdeeds.
If he has two to give, then that's the biggest news of all! (Sorry, I couldn't resist.) Sounds to me like the clan just wanted some more goats and birds.
He is also alleged to have slept with his grandmother before she passed away two years back.
Maybe the two cocks were too much for her?
However, in his defence, Waiswa said he was cursed by his parents. He pleaded guilty to all the accusations.
Maybe if he'd given his parents two cocks, one for each of them, they wouldn't have cursed him?

In a similar development, residents of Bulondo village in Buwaya sub-county also expelled Saida Naigaga, 60 and her daughter Hajira Kauma, 38 from the area for allegedly engaging in quarrels and fights over a man.

Sounds like he only had one cock to give, and they both wanted it at the same time?

Sorry, folks. Inside every man there's a 13-year-old boy who sometimes gets out. Getting serious, the real news here is that anyone is trying to stop consenting adults from loving each other in the way they want. It's waste of time at "best" and cruel at its worst. It shouldn't be anyone else's concern if other adults get together or break up.
