Log Cabin Republicans Slam "Gay Stereotypes" In Obamacare Pitch
Via press release from Log Cabin Republicans head Gregory Angelo:
This cynical ad betrays the depths Obamacare advocates will sink to in order to pad their pathetic enrollment numbers. As a self-proclaimed ‘fierce advocate’ of gay equality, President Obama would do well to distance himself from this nonsense and denounce it immediately. This ad is also an example of the left promoting harmful stereotypes that gay men are nothing more than sex-crazed lechers. If anyone on the right made such a comparison, liberals would be apoplectic. At a time when left-wing propagandists are decrying Duck Dynasty‘s Phil Robertson for equating homosexuality with promiscuity and deviance, Out2Enroll and others should take a look in the mirror and ask if the truth is that they are the ones responsible for promoting such harmful stereotypes. Here's the ad, which I first posted last week.

Beefcake For Obamacare
Clip recap:
Out2Enroll is a coalition of organizations who want to help lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people stay healthy by making sure that one of the major benefits of the Affordable Care Act -- access to affordable, comprehensive health insurance coverage -- reaches LGBT communities. Get Enrolled is a holiday parody, produced by our friends at Full Frontal Freedom, which aims to bring awareness to the final week of health marketplace enrollment.Visit Out2Enroll.

Obamacare: Sign Up Cuz It's Hot
A new video that encourages Obamacare enrollment has the wingnuts howling. Via Talking Points Memo:
The video, done by a President Obama impersonator, parodies Snoop Dogg's hit "Drop It Like It's Hot." "And if you need that new healthcare, sign up cause it's hot," the performer sings in the video. An innocuous parody? Hardly. Rove, the former right-hand man to a president who donned a flight suit and landed on an aircraft carrier before delivering a nationally televised speech, said he worries about "something that seems to aim at glorification of the commander-in-chief." "[The video] disturbingly gets too close to the line," Rove said. Van Susteren agreed and said the video is "sort of insulting to young people because it says get Obamacare because it's cool, not because substantively it is a good program for you, it's important for your health."
Politifact's Lie Of the Year: If You Like Your Health Insurance, You Can Keep It
Politifact has named its Lie Of The Year for 2013.
It was a catchy political pitch and a chance to calm nerves about his dramatic and complicated plan to bring historic change to America’s health insurance system. "If you like your health care plan, you can keep it," President Barack Obama said -- many times -- of his landmark new law. But the promise was impossible to keep. So this fall, as cancellation letters were going out to approximately 4 million Americans, the public realized Obama’s breezy assurances were wrong. Boiling down the complicated health care law to a soundbite proved treacherous, even for its promoter-in-chief. Obama and his team made matters worse, suggesting they had been misunderstood all along. The stunning political uproar led to this: a rare presidential apology.Right wing sites (which typically denounce Politifact) are doing back flips.

Women Often Lose Health Insurance Coverage After Divorce
Long-term marriage has been an endangered species for some time in our society. Couples in the United States divorce at the rate of approximately one million times each year.
Divorce is Hell for both men and women. Even in our post-modern society, however, women still seem to get the brunt of the pain.
According to a recent study published by the University of Michigan, approximately 115,000 women nationwide lose their health insurance coverage as a direct result of the divorce process. Of these, some 65,000 never re-gain coverage.
The study was conducted by Bridget Lavelle, a UM sociology doctoral candidate. Ms. Lavelle examined literature and data from survey respondents who divorced between the years 1996 and 2007. The December issue of the Journal of Health and Social Behavior will feature the study.
Lavelle postulates that women's loss of health insurance benefits is not just a temporary disruption resulting from the divorce process. Rather, she concludes that the loss of health insurance coverage for women is a long-term problem that compounds the economic losses of divorced women.
What's worse is that mid-income women have the greatest risk of loss of coverage because they do not qualify for Medicaid or other safety-net coverage options available to lower income divorcees.
We here at the Law Blogger wonder what effect Obamacare and the Affordable Care Act will have on this equation next year when everyone must carry insurance by mandate of federal law.
When facing a divorce, if you are at risk of losing your health insurance coverage, consider demanding some form of short-term alimony payments sufficient to cover the 3-year period of COBRA available from your spouse's employer. Or, in the alternative, shop for comparable affordable health insurance.
The short-term alimony approach will at least cover women during the initial transition from marriage when, as posited by Ms. Lavelle, they are most at risk to lose health insurance coverage, and suffer even greater economic hardships as a result.
